The Nasdaq tech-heavy index continues to be under pressure this week, with the benchmark dropping by as much as 1. Although there are many theories as to why the Nasdaq performance has turned to red these last few days, nobody can really pinpoint what the major driver behind this meltdown is. So far we have multiple elements that seem to be affecting the price of the stocks that comprise the index, including some of the following:.

Nasdaq historical data shows that the index may have peaked on September 2 at 12,, after reaching a staggering Meanwhile, the charts also show a hanging man candle forming that exact day — a pattern that points to a trend reversal. Furthermore, the RSI was also on overbought territory and the MACD reached levels that were just unprecedented in the history of the index. All of those elements probably flashed too many warning signals for investors.

This could be one of the reasons why we have been seeing such a sharp drop in the past few weeks, as investors have probably decided to take profits before things got out of hand. Nasdaq index historical data also suggests that valuations have been flying too high, as companies such as Apple , Microsoft , Amazon , Facebook , Google , Tesla , and NVIDIA — which account for almost half of the index — have been trading at price-to-earnings ratios above 40, before this meltdown.

These valuations were hard to justify considering the currently depressed global economic environment and the challenges that some of these companies still have to face as the world emerges from a pandemic that is still ongoing. Rumours had been running about a big whale that had been buying call options on these high-flying tech companies since the pandemic rally started. This unusual activity ended up serving as a catalyst for stock prices to go up as brokers had to buy the underlying securities tracked by these derivatives to hedge their positions.

This situation, according to sources familiar with the matter, could have created a reinforcing loop where further call buying increased the volume of shares bought by brokers to hedge, which pushed prices up, and so on.
